IELTS Writing Task 1

Task 1: The graph below shows the rate of smoking per 1000 people in Someland from 1960 to 2000.

Sample

The chart below displays Someland’s smoking prevalence per 1000 residents from 1960 to 2000.

Overall, it could be seen that the two genders followed opposite trends. While men dominated the initial year but dropped gradually toward the end, females fluctuated following an upward trend and ended up being similar to the figure for men. 

In 1960, the number of males who had a smoking habit was 600 which was over 6 times higher compared to the figure for females. There was a slight reduction in the number of male smokers while the figure for women increased significantly to 200 in the year 1965. Over the next 10 years, the number of women smokers witnessed a dramatic increase of 100 which was 200 lower than the figure for men with an opposite development.

From 1975 to 1990, the statistics for female smokers remained stable. Meanwhile, there was a sharp decline in the number of male smokers to less than 400 smokers which was 100 people higher compared to that of women. In the last decade, the rate of smoking in both genders dropped moderately, with 200 female smokers which were four-fifths in comparison with the male smokers.

Phân tích

Bài viết được viết theo hướng ưu tiên việc “so sánh” số liệu giữa số lượng người hút thuốc cả 2 giới tính là nam và nữ, kèm theo việc thể hiện “xu hướng” tăng hoặc giảm qua thời gian. Hạn chế tối đa việc liệt kê số liệu đơn thuần.

Câu Overall bao gồm 2 vế, vừa thể hiện được sự tương phản giữa 2 lines và cũng thể hiện được cơ bản sự phát triển qua 40 năm.

Body thứ 1 thể hiện xu hướng của 2 số liệu từ năm 1960 tới 1975. Trong giai đoạn này, 2 nhóm số liệu phát triển theo 2 hướng đối lập nhau: nam giảm, nữ tăng. Body thứ 2 thể hiện xu hướng tương đồng giữa 2 số liệu từ năm 1975 tới năm 2000. Cả 2 đều giảm nhưng số liệu của nam vẫn cao hơn.

IELTS Writing Task 2

Task 2: Smokers have rights too, so they should be allowed to smoke in public places. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Sample

In contemporary society, there are growing debates about whether or not smokers have the right to smoke in communal locations. From my personal perspective, I acknowledge that people have their own right to smoke; however, smoking in public areas should be banned for certain reasons which would be analysed objectively throughout the course of this essay.

On the one hand, individuals are legally entitled to decide whether or not to smoke as long as it does not compromise others. To begin with, people who smoke purchase cigarettes in a legitimate way as they use their own money to afford them and pay taxes as well. Therefore, it would be unreasonable to take the rights away from smokers. Furthermore, smoking should also be considered an individual’s hobby due to the fact that it could increase one’s mental capability. For instance, some people working in certain fields of art or holding vital positions in businesses find lighting a cig effective in stress management and creativity enhancement; hence, smoking could be useful to a certain extent. 

On the other hand, the opposite is also true: both smokers and non-smokers have individual rights. As a result, it is unjust for persons who oppose smoking or have a smoking-related ailment to be passive smokers since they have their own jurisdiction. As in this situation, smokers and non-smokers, no one could corruptly utilise one right to violate another’s rights and vice versa. Furthermore, careless smokers could pose a variety of risks. A single cigarette tip, for instance, could cause a blaze when it is dropped close towards something flammable.

In conclusion, there is certainly no dispute that smokers have the freedom to engage in the behaviour; yet, the impacts on surrounding people should also be properly considered.
