The line graph depicts the variations in levels in three types of crime in the city center of Newport, between 2003 and 2012.

In general, in the city center of Newport, the rate of burglary decreased dramatically, while the rate of robbery stabilized and the number of car thefts increased throughout the surveyed period. 

To begin with, in 2003, burglary (about 3400 cases) outnumbered car theft (approximately 2800) and robbery at just above 500. Over the next four years, the figures for burglary decreased substantially to around only 1000 cases and from 2007 onwards, there were more cases of car theft than burglary, which is followed by robbery. 

Car theft was a consistent level of crime from 2003 to 2005, at around 2600 cases. After fluctuations between 2000 and 2600, the figures for this crime experienced a slight drop to under 2500 case in 2012. The number of robberies peaked in 2005 at 900, then dropped to 500 in 2008. This then climbed back to 700 in the following two years before remaining at that level by the end of the period.

Violence in media has become more and more prevalent as the years go by, primarily as a result of overexposure to daily media. The government, in my opinion, should take appropriate action to curb violence displayed on these publications, and the reasons for which would be explained in the following paragraphs. 

To begin with, research has associated exposure to media violence with a variety of physical and mental health problems for children and adolescents, including aggressive and violent behavior, bullying, desensitization to violence, fear, depression, nightmares, and sleep disturbances. For example, the HBO series Game of Thrones features a lot of action sequences and gruesome killing that the entire globe enjoys, yet the overconsumption of these contents may abolish the ability to discriminate between fantasy and reality among young viewers. 

Furthermore, there is a plethora of platforms, which are not governed by any state agency, displaying adult-only contents nowadays. Horrifying bloodshedding movie scenes are favored by most people due to the sensationalism, along with the adrenaline surge they bring about. Though adding creeping adult content into PG-13 movies and film makers are able to sell more tickets to their movie thus in turn earn more money, this is proved to increase the risk of violent behavior on the viewer’s side while growing up in an environment filled with such problem. The society would be put under direct threat by youngsters who are constantly exposed to female harassment, kidnapping or acid assaults. 

To summarize, the bulk of violence occurs as a result of being affected by films and television and I believe that taking significant legal actions in controlling media content ​​would promote a reduction of people’s violent behavior.
