Câu tường thuật (Reported Speech) là một trong những dạng ngữ pháp quan trọng để đạt được điểm cao kỹ năng IELTS Speaking, đặc biệt là dạng câu tường thuật if whether. Định nghĩa về câu tường thuật

Khi giao tiếp tiếng Anh thường ngày, chúng ta thường sử dụng hai loại câu, một là câu trực tiếp và hai là câu tường thuật. Câu tường thuật, hay là câu trần thuật trong tiếng Anh là Reported Speech. Dạng câu tường thuật thường được sử dụng trong các cuộc hội thoại hằng ngày hoặc trong các bài phát biểu để thuật lại một hành động, một lời nói của bất kỳ cá nhân nào đó. 

Ví dụ như khi ta muốn kể lại cho anh A về câu nói của anh B, ta sẽ dùng câu trả lời gián tiếp. Nói cách khác, câu tường thuật là gián tiếp trình bày lại sự việc. Để biết được cách dùng câu tường thuật, ta cần hiểu rõ các dạng của câu tường thuật, nhất là dạng câu tường thuật if/whether.

Cách dùng với câu tường thuật if (whether)

Cấu trúc câu tường thuật if/whether thường xuất hiện trong câu hỏi Yes-No Questions và câu hỏi gián tiếp với “or”. Thông thường, ta sử dụng “If” nhiều hơn “Whether”.

E.g: 

• He asked: “Are you upset?”

-> He asked if/whether I was upset. (Anh ấy hỏi tôi có bối rối không.)

• “Did you drink coke?” She asked.

-> She asked if/whether I had drunk coke. (Cô ấy hỏi tôi có uống coca không.)

Lưu ý

If và Whether vẫn cần phân biệt trong các trường hợp sau:

1. Thường dùng Whether sau động từ Discuss

E.g: “Should we go to the cinema?” We discussed it.

-> We discussed whether we should go to the cinema. 

(Chúng tôi bàn luận có nên đi xem phim không.)

2. Chỉ dùng Whether sau giới từ

E.g: We talked about whether he should be hired or not. 

(Chúng tôi nói chuyện liệu anh ấy sẽ được nhận hay không.)

3. Chỉ dùng Whether với các động từ nguyên thể (To-Infinitive)

E.g: She cannot decide whether to eat at home or eat out.

(Cô ấy không thể quyết định được nên ăn nhà hay ăn ngoài.)

4. Cuộc hội thoại mang hình thức xã giao, tính chất cuộc họp quan trọng, ta dùng Whether

E.g: Let me know whether he will be able to attend the meeting.

(Hãy cho tôi biết liệu anh ấy có thể tham gia cuộc gặp mặt hay không?)

5. Cuộc hội thoại mang tính chất suồng sã, thân mật, ta dùng If

E.g: He asked if I had eaten dinner. 

(Anh ấy hỏi tôi đã ăn tối chưa.)

6. Khi câu hỏi gián tiếp được đẩy lên đầu câu, ta dùng Whether

E.g: Whether he will eat the candies I am not sure.

(Tôi không chắc anh ấy sẽ ăn kẹo hay không.)

7. Chúng ta sử dụng cụm từ Whether – or not chứ không dùng If – or not.

E.g: I don’t know whether she will eat carrots or not.

(Tôi không biết cô ấy sẽ ăn cà rốt hay không.)
